Are you already dreading the thought of the long summer holiday vacation and wondering how you are possibly going to keep your child busy and productive? Worry no more. We have 15, low cost tips and ideas for fun, outside activities that will keep your little ones engaged with nature and off the devices.
Go on a Bug Hunt Children are just fascinated with bugs and love hunting high and low for them. It's also a great way to begin teaching them about looking after nature and the environment. Use this FREE bug hunt tick sheet that you can download at the end of this list.
2. Keep a nature journal.
Start this at the start of the summer and children can add to it throughout the holiday. Encourage them to look out for things in nature that interests and inspires them. They can record them in their journal with photos, drawings, diary entries. They could even stick in interesting finds such as leaves, flowers etc.
3. Grow something from seed.
Sunflowers, lettuce leaves, beans are all easily grown from seed and can be grown in a pot. Children love taking care of their plants and watching them grow.
4. Sit outside and read a book or do some sketching.
5. Decorate some rocks and stones.
This is great fun and they can be used in a variety of ways. Paint them as your child's favourite animals, cartoon characters, superheroes, book characters - anything you like! You can use them to tell stories, in dramatic play, to decorate the garden or leave them around your local area for other children to find.
6. Go on a nature hunt.

7. Draw some shadows on a sunny day.
8. Make your own weather station and record the weather each day.

9. Make a nature crown.
Find some interesting leaves and stick them to a paper headband.
10. Paint with water.
Take a bucket of water outside and a paintbrush and have some fun, painting the floor and the walls.
11. Collect a rainbow.
Go on a nature walk and collect as many different colours as you can. Stick them onto the sheet below (download for free at the end of the list) to make a natural rainbow.
12. Do some leaf rubbings or printing.
Find some interesting leaves and use wax crayons and paper to make some leaf rubbings or paints to make leaf prints.
13. Make a bird feeder.
Follow the instruction sheet to make your own bird feeder. Have fun watching the birds as they feed.
14. Learn some yoga or mindfulness and practise outside.
